I'm a little busy these days with house stuff, work and a little something called the SPAC Winter Ball.. Bond: Shaken Not Stirred. Yes, it's a James Bond theme and no, I haven't mentioned it enough (sorry!) but the truth is I haven't mentioned much of anything on this blog lately..

Well with the date quickly approaching, we're working to finish up last minute details while getting the word out and trying to create a little (actually a lot of) excitement! house update.. with pictures!

So we've had a lot of requests for house updates on Building Bensonhurst. Because I haven't found the time to update this blog regularly enough (I know, you've all noticed), Building Bensonhurst most definitely is not on my daily to-do list. Right now my plate is full enough as it is. But that doesn't mean a lot hasn't been going on at the house.

We're almost there! Hopefully only about a month out.. but because the finishing stages came so quickly, I really have found myself scrambling, trying to get decisions made so materials could be purchased before we started really holding any subcontractors up. Yes, Ben and I have talked about what kind of siding we would do for months (no actually years) now, but we always disagreed and then ended our conversation with "we'll figure it out when it's time." Well "time" came very quickly and like most things lately, my decisions have been made in 30 second phone calls with Ben- usually the conversation starts with "We need to make a decision on..." and then I say "Right now?" and he responds with a definitive "Yes!" and then I give him my decision. Of course this isn't at all the way I would suggest anyone make design decisions.. it certainly isn't my typical decision-making process- especially when working with clients, but so far everything has really worked out. To be honest, my instincts are usually pretty spot on and I really can't think of a time when I've changed my mind about anything design related, so I guess this has become our successful way of getting things done.. Now if only picking out baby names came as simply to us.

Anyway, as for progress.. our bathrooms are tiled, our walls are sheetrocked (to be primed tomorrow!) and our floors (well, half of them) are being delivered later this week. The scale and configuration of the space is hard to decipher in pictures, but here goes anyway..

So basically we added a master bedroom suite downstairs and an office, extra bathroom and laundry upstairs. And like many, when renovating old homes, we added closets where ever possible.. now I just have to hope that my energy level stays up long enough for me to actually get to organizing them!

Hall
Our back hall had two bedrooms, a bathroom and our lovely old garage off of it. In order to accommodate our new living/sleeping quarters, we got rid of the garage and continued to build off of the hall. We added a coat closet (heaven!) and reconfigured our existing bedroom closet, since we lost the old one in the demo process.. so right now, our hall looks like an unfinished mess..

Not to mention you can see right into our shower, which obviously won't be the case once the doors are installed!

Master Bedroom
We took the basic outline of the garage and extended it a few feet to make a decent size master suite- while keeping it to scale with the rest of the house. The best part? It's complete with a walk in closet and a small closet for Ben.. at least that's what everyone says when they walk into the space. But the reality is, Ben has way more clothes than me. I prefer to collect furnishings.. and once our closets are done I can clean all of his extra dress shirts out of the attic and store more furniture up there!

The master bathroom was fun to work on because I really tried to be creative with storage spaces. We opted for two pedestal sinks- partially to save money, but mostly because the space allotted for the double sinks didn't allow for the type of vanity I wanted. I wanted to stay away from the double pedestal, double medicine cabinet look. So instead we bought an ikea cabinet to be installed next to the shower and Ben built a little shelving unit for behind it so we wouldn't lose any space. The hole next to the shower is where the cabinet will go..

As for the tile, we went simple, white- with dark grout of course! I wanted to go really classic, in keeping with the style of the house.

Ben practiced his carpentry skills, once again, to build me custom shower niches- above for shampoo and soap, below is a ledge so I can comfortably shave my legs (though Ben likes to say it's for travel size shampoo bottles). The lower ledge became a serious debate in our house- Ben wanted me to do a corner shelf instead- I said if we did a corner shelf I'd never shave my legs again.. I won that one, and I think it looks great.

Upstairs Bath
Or the dogs bath, as I like to refer to it as. Since we now have three full baths, this one will be used pretty infrequently. I decided to do a hand shower up there so we can, once and for all, stop bathing the dogs in the kitchen sink! Ben might think it's easier to just throw them in at counter height but then I'm stuck scrubbing for the rest of the night..

Anyway, the upstairs shower is small, but again classic- white tile with really dark grout- it's hard to tell in the pictures, but the grout colors (up and downstairs) are actually very different.

The bathroom and the laundry are very tight and hard to photograph. Since there isn't much there now- other than some sheetrock, I left them out- but once we get some fixtures in there, I'll be sure to post more.. fingers crossed we get the washer and dryer upstairs ASAP, it's getting hard for me to maneuver up and down the basement stairs with a laundry basket these days..

The Office
Perhaps our favorite room- though it was a little unexpected. The light is incredible and the ceiling height makes this space feel huge, but not too huge at the same time.

And considering I can't step foot in my current office at the moment due to the amount of stuff in there, I'm very much looking forward to this new space.

The Exterior

And last, but certainly not least.. the most exciting change in recent weeks has been the overhaul of our exterior. I'm sure our neighbors have been cursing us for not redoing the siding sooner, but we clearly had a good reason to wait..

In the next couple of weeks the walls will get color and the floors will be finished. Yes, I might have complained about how the months and this project has dragged on, but like I always say, when it's done, you barely remember how inconvenienced you were. In the end, it's always worth it.

I've started limiting my time spent on e-magazines recently (is that really what we're calling them?). The truth is, I've discovered that I can't even find the time to give the magazines I actually pay for a decent sit through, but whenever I see another monthly magazine issue in my inbox, I still try to give it a decent flip through. And today, Rue's January issue was waiting for me..

Instead of waiting until I "found the time" to read it, I opted to tackle it right away and in turn, I was treated to a little drama, a lot of art and some really fabulous pillows..

Designer Lisa Sherry created the perfectly inspirational space for her visits to High Point, North Carolina. Her 1,000 square foot loft may not be her primary residence, but she sure didn't treat it that way..

I love how the furnishings don't distract from her view and all of the fabulous natural light..

Feels feminine and sophisticated.. the bedside lamps don't match, something few would do, but it's very charming..

Fabulous and very dramatic art throughout.. kind of makes me want to paint a mural on our powder room wall.. (add it to the list..)

And my absolute favorite- the striped den. I love the color and stripe detail, but I really just want those pillows!

what i'm loving.. calacatta

I have a new obsession with calacatta marble.. as in I want to use it everywhere. That's right, I'd like to be surrounded by the creamy white, veiny marble with brown and gold undertones.

Now of course if you do a bathroom in it, it can get pricey. Worth it for some, but unfortunately so not worth it in our little house. A fully marbled out bath definitely wouldn't look right, but let's be honest, the cost is what really stopped me from making my new/current dream a reality. Spending thousands and thousands of dollars on our bathroom tile just wasn't going to cut it. We still have subcontractors to pay and finishes to pick out.. not to mention all of the furnishing plans I have tucked away for when our bank account is feeling a little less depleted.

So my brilliant idea was to add a little calacatta to spruce up our master bath. I searched high and low for what I wanted, very thin pieces to line our floor's perimeter. For two weeks straight all I thought about was our floor, how it could be executed and how we could keep it in our price range. And Tuesday morning I finally purchased the four sample pieces we needed to accomplish my goal! The only problem was, the tile installer came by yesterday and told me it wouldn't work. Back to square one? Not exactly. I ended up giving my dreams of a calacatta detail on the floor. The installer wanted to start today and I certainly wasn't going to hold him up. Dissappointing? A little, but at this rate, I just want to get it done! That and I still think I can sneak a little calacatta in there another way.. back to the drawing board..

But in the meantime, feast your eyes on these calacatta beauties. Ignore the fixtures, even the design, just do your self a favor and stare at the marble.

I have already read House Beautiful's February issue cover to cover. Quite a feat considering I'm pretty sure I still haven't flipped through the October, November, December and even January issues yet. For some reason finding it in my mailbox inspired me to dive right in.. like even before I made it into the house.

If you don't get your own subscription I'd suggest picking up this issue- the homes featured are rich, vibrant and full of fun details, but the real page turner (is it gross to say the real drool producer?) was a Venice bungalow designed by Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe.

Maybe I love it so much because it's so similar to how I see Ben and I living when our monstrous project is complete. It's bright, eclectic and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want that bookshelf wallpaper all over my house..

Unfortunately the images have yet to make it on HB's website- and I wouldn't dare butcher the home by scanning it. But this slideshow- featuring great before and afters is just as good.. maybe even better. It's amazing what a little paint, labor and lots of patience can accomplish!

Oh and did I mention that we literally picked our siding color earlier last week and it might as well be the same exact color used on this fabulous bungalow.

The highlight of last weeks office design post (if you ask me) was Aaron Straup Cope's nyc map. I fell for it immediately- the colors are fabulous, but perhaps what I love most is what it represents.. it's true, after almost two and half years upstate, I am officially a Saratogian, but New York City will always be home.. (kind of).

But don't worry other city lovers, Aaron used his incredible talent on lots of city maps, so make sure to check out 20x200 to find your perfect version of his colorful pieces.

But whether or not you love a colorful design, maps are a fun and creative way to decorate. There's definitely no rule about keeping it in a frame either. Paste it to a wall, add them to some furniture, even dress a window with your favorite city. All are recommended.

So believe it or not I had yet to really think about decorating my office. The other rooms are pretty much planned- and while not everything has been purchased, all of the details are planted firmly in my head. From furniture to window treatments, I know exactly where everything will go- and where I'll buy it, but the office has really taken a back seat. Usually when looking at a space- whether it be in a clients home or from a blueprint, I immediately know exactly what the finished product will look like, which is probably why I haven't really taken the time to work on my office space. I guess I assumed it would just come to me at some point.. or that it would be thoroughly neglected until I couldn't take it anymore.

Well, the time has come and I've finally put together a rough scheme that I'll probably be basing my office off of. Most of the furniture I already have (bonus!) others, I might find slight variations of along the way, but the lighting is set and at the moment, that's of utmost importance!

Today was insulation day. No, not installation day.. insulation day. But if you read that too fast you were probably thinking I was busy pulling out new linens, accessorizing and hanging art. Oh how I wish that were so. Instead I'm banned from my home/office while spray foam is being applied to every surface on both floors of the new part of the house.

The truth is, we could have used the extra insulation over the weekend.. did you think it was unbearably cold or was it just me? But instead, the compressor broke on Friday (when it was originally scheduled to be finished) and we slept in a not-so-warm house all weekend while I anticipated my Monday exile. So this morning, the dogs and I awoke to what sounded like an airplane engine in the next room over, while Ben ran a heater to make sure the walls and ceiling were warm enough to hold the foam. When the insulation guys arrived, I piled the pups into the car and headed to daycare- I decided that if it wasn't safe for me to be in the house it certainly wasn't safe for them either. At the risk of sounding like a crazy-dog-lady, though I'm sure most of you already think I am one, I will mention that driving two whiny dogs to daycare is not the most relaxing way to spend a Monday morning. Can't wait to add a baby to this circus..

With the dogs settled (thankfully they passed their evaluation, though I'll admit I had my doubts).. I've now checked into my temporary office (aka Uncommon Grounds) and decided to take a minute to admire Elle Decor's readers top rooms of 2011. If you want a shopping guide for this holiday season (and if you're local) I'd suggest picking up the winter issue of Saratoga Living.. that's about all the shopping advice I'm going to give this season. But that's not to say I haven't seen some fabulous things. I would happily go crazy filling my online shopping carts with all of the great accessories available, but like many, I'm keeping my credit card to myself and am trying to get through the season with a goal in mind- save, save, save..

If you're in the process of a kitchen re-do or thinking about taking one on in the near future, House Beautiful may just have what you need. They've asked kitchen designer Mick de Guilio to share his thoughts on the most important elements in a kitchen. You can read it here.

If you're starting from scratch (like building a home) this is definitely a list to consider, but unfortunately most of us already have somewhat challenging spaces to work with and all of de Guilio's fabulous ideas just aren't possible. So, since renovations happen to be my specialty, I've decided to put together a short list of my own (in no particular order). Obviously my picks won't necessarily work for everyone, so if you are taking on a renovation, perhaps you should consider calling me for a personalized consultation in addition to reading the list.. a badly designed kitchen is a very costly mistake..

The Working Triangle

When designing a functional kitchen, every contractor, designer and architect will tell you the most important thing to consider is functionality and the work triangle. While triangles differ slightly, according to the footprint of the kitchen, the idea remains the same, an unobstructed "triangular" path between all major kitchen elements creates a fluid working space.

Shelving

Whether it be free standing bookcases, open shelves or something built in, shelving is a great way to store everything from cookbooks to mixing bowls to baking supplies. Add a little color or stick to neutral tones, filling shelves is the perfect way to accessorize a kitchen. From a more functional standpoint, consider how practical it is to have your frequently used items out in the open at all times. They allow for great flexibility since they can constantly be rearranged according to your needs.

Personality

A kitchen should be a reflection of the person who lives and works in it and since no two people are the same, maybe no two kitchens should be the same either. When pulling your space together, make sure it's a room that reflects you, your tastes and what makes you comfortable. If you don't love spending time in it, cooking and cleaning can turn into nothing but a chore. And definitely don't shy away from adding things that you love into the space. Just because a mirror isn't typically considered a kitchen must-have doesn't mean it doesn't add a wonderful element to the overall design.

Statement Lighting

Whether you prefer flush mounts, pendants or chandeliers, a kitchen is the perfect place to showcase your unique finds. Perhaps it's even the easiest way to add a little personality to your space. Most of us spend way more time in the kitchen that any other room in the house, so why save the good stuff for the living room? Remember, a kitchen is still a public space, so chances are your guests will also get the opportunity to admire your find. So skip the boring hardware store finds and opt for something that can brighten up your space- literally and figuratively. Just remember, it does no good if it's beautiful but doesn't give off enough light.

Counter Space

A fabulous island or peninsula may be on the wish list of many, but adding counter space of that proportion isn't do-able for all. If you're tight on square footage, just try to maximize what you have. Always take your own cooking habits into consideration and make sure you have appropriate staging areas around appliances. Looking for a no-cost trick? Keep counters clear. A clutter free kitchen always appears bigger.

Maximize Your Space

Rarely do you ever hear someone complain about having too much storage space in their kitchen. Unfortunately the majority of us wish we had much, much more. So imagine letting inches go to waste with random fillers and lost corners. Instead, use pull-outs and carve out shelving to maximize your space. Don't let an inch go to waste. While you might think "what could I possibly put in there?" now, when your kitchen is filled to the max you'll absolutely find a purpose for those charming little spots.

And I'm back in business..

I'm sure you're all tired of my excuses but I've had some good reasons as to why my posts have been lacking in the last few months. While I'll get to them shortly, I wanted to mention a couple things before I get started..

Planning is way under way for the SPAC Winter Ball. If you're local you probably already know that last years Mad Men Twist was a major hit and we promise not to disappoint this year! While the theme is still under wraps (and I'm not spilling the beans), I can definitely say it's going to be one incredible event, so I suggest getting those glamorous get-ups ready and saving the date.. Saturday, February 25th at the Hall of Springs. I'll keep you all updated as the exciting details are revealed..

And now for my excuses.. other than typical day-to-day work..
As you all may know, our house construction is way under way. Not only have I posted about it previously, but it's also pretty obvious if you did a quick drive by- or if your one of the select few who are actually allowed into our home during the construction. It's an absolute disaster (I know I've written similar things before, but now I really mean it) so if I've been rude and haven't invited you in it's because I'm horrified and don't want anyone to think we normally live like this. It will so be worth it when it's all done, but in the meantime, my "to-do/shopping" list continues to grow at a rapid pace and I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed at the moment. It's all pretty typical- just when I think I can cross something off my list it has to be re-visited due to changes. So for the next few months I know I'll be busy trying to pull our home back together- which by the way always takes much longer than if I were doing it for someone else..

But if we're being honest here, it really wasn't work or the house that has prevented me from posting over the last few months, but it was terrible morning sickness.. you know the kind where you can do nothing but mope around, carrying on about how nauseous you are, only to take a break by running to the toilet? If you have been pregnant and have no idea what I'm talking about, you have no idea how jealous I am. But if you have experienced it yourself, maybe you can understand why it's been work, sleep, eat and vomit for the last few months.. with just not time (or energy) for blogging. I'm starting to feel better (every other day or so) and am hoping to get my life back.. that is until May comes around and my life is no longer my own. In the meantime, I'll try my best to stay on top of this blogging thing- but if I miss a day or two or even three, please try to be patient.. I could be busy with work or perhaps even trying to tackle my to-do list or you never know, it could just be one of those running-to-the-toilet kind of days.. though I am hoping those lovely days are numbered.

house ramblings

Our house project is moving a lot slower than we had hoped- as in they still haven't finished framing and originally Ben "promised" it would be done by Thanksgiving. See when your contractor and designer say it always takes longer than you think it will.. well we're telling the truth. I've been careful not to complain, but I really would love to get into those finishing stages since I have a ton to do- and we're passed the point of having plenty of time.

Not to mention I had to (yes, had to) buy a new car, which I pretty much needed, but I really was hoping to reserve those funds for some new furniture and window treatments. I literally would drive the same car and wear the same clothes for decades if it meant I was allowed to spend more money on our house. It's all about making choices! And luckily for me, Ben is ok with my crazy reasoning.

In the meantime, our house continues to get worse before it gets better. It's impossible to keep on top of the dust and filth (the dogs add to it in a major way) so I've just given up- which means I'm avoiding all guests until we get some new closets in here.

But enough about our disastrous house.. instead, I'm going to pretend my house looks like this East Hampton home designed by Kerry Delrose..

Look familiar? I've posted about my love for this outdoor space many times before..

Keep your fingers crossed that come springtime our yard looks more like this than a dumping ground..

bedding upgrade

With two very cuddly (perhaps even a little needy) dogs, Ben and I have decided that it would be in our best interest to upgrade to a king size bed. I swear I haven't had a decent night sleep since Henry graduated from his crate- it's like he needs to be touching me at all times.. I'm thinking there's a very good chance that a king size bed is not going to change that, but I think it's worth a try..

Anyway, I've been playing with our bedroom decor and while the space has yet to even be sheetrocked, I figured I might as well start looking for bedding- for a few reasons..

1. I'm not willing to pay full price. There are so many things on my furnishing budget and I'm convinced we can't go without anything, so with limited funds I'm trying to stretch them out as much as I can. Plus I now need a new car which really threw a wrench in the plan (long story).

2. I refuse to buy just because I have to. My worst nightmare is realizing we have guests coming and having to run to the store to buy whatever I can get my hands on.

3. I enjoy the "hunt". It allows me to really shop around, research and play with different styles and ideas.

So last week I picked up a really great Ralph Lauren plaid bed blanket at TJ Maxx. Whether he believes it or not, I bought it for Ben- he can't stand the idea of all white bedding and this is the perfect combination of ivory and camel- a color scheme I had decided on months ago. Normally I would never go plaid, but I liked it, it was heavy, nicely made and I thought if we used it I could get away without a coverlet for a few months.

Unfortunately I can't find a picture of it anywhere online.. but this one has a similar look..

I can't wait to curl up in it this winter.. mostly because that would mean our work is done.. In the meantime I'll keep shopping around for all of the other bedding pieces we need. I'm thinking this Pottery Barn velvet duvet is a good place to start..

Though Ben's made it clear he thinks we already have way too much velvet in our house.. How much is too much you ask? Apparently a velvet sofa..

mid-century shopping spree

If you know me, you know I love me some Mid-Century furniture.. The designs are almost structural, high design and still comfortable. Mix with streamlined, contemporary pieces, blend with traditional finds or stick to everything Mid-Century modern. Either way, adding one piece or twelve to your collection is the perfect way to bring a little style to your space. So where do you get these great pieces? If you're patient and willing to run the risk of having to refinish a piece (if it's authentic there's a good chance the last few decades has caused a little wear and tear) go antiquing, visit a flea market, cross your fingers that someone in your community is looking to get rid of a piece or two and check Craigslist. But if you're looking for high quality furniture that's in perfect condition, check out Thrive Home Furnishings.

Back to blogging! I wish I could say my absence was due to a fabulous trip abroad, but instead I have to blame work and other random projects for my lack of creative posts.

One of those so-called "random" projects has become a major challenge for me and while I'm always up for a challenge, it's true what they say.. working with family is really hard. Especially when that family is my sister Dena.

This time we aren't talking interiors, unfortunately I can't pull the "I'm the professional" card in order to get my way, but instead, it's her wedding to Jared that has me tossing and turning at night. Now I've posted about them many, many times before, but if you've missed those posts, let me touch upon one minor detail before I jump into my inspiration..

Everyone thinks Dena and I are twins (even though we look nothing alike) so they just assume we are the same person, when in reality, we couldn't be more different. I'm decisive and always know exactly what I want and when I want it, Dena needs to hear every option available to her and has only been known to actually decide on something if it's forced upon her- then, more often than not, she changes her mind anyway.

Now, as you can imagine, that creates a bit of an issue when it comes to planning a wedding- and most importantly nailing down a date and a location. Obviously I took the lead (I tend to be the one who really gets things done!) and after many phone calls, it's now (finally) looking like they may actually get married after all. It's worth mentioning Dena called off the wedding three times this past week alone because planning is "too stressful" and she'd rather just be engaged.. I don't really blame her..

After weeks of debate, I think she's finally decided that her (and Jared's) location of choice is Martha's Vineyard- literally she considered everyplace you can imagine from Napa to Rome. And just a little side note- the cake below must be chocolate. If I ever suggested something white frosted I'd surely be fired on the spot..

I think it's safe to say, Dena's on her own next time around!

a bathroom obsession

I'm not sure if it was the fun commercial above or the fabulously designed Kohler fixtures that caught my eye and turned our original master bath plan upside down.

Yes, it's true, other pieces (the Bancroft collection) were already ordered and even paid for, but thankfully due to our multiple delays, I was able to swap out my original selections- perhaps that's the one major benefit of a very slow moving job..

I think it's worth mentioning I love practically every piece in this collection- including the great looking shower receptors that I actually secretly wish we could have used..

As to be expected, these new Kohler products are slightly delayed (4-6 weeks) which really shouldn't be an issue considering our bathroom is currently still without walls. But to be honest, if I had to, I'd use our powder room until they arrived- without a single complaint. After all, waiting a few weeks is nothing if it means I get to use those beauties on a regular basis.

So while our bathroom was originally supposed to look like this, these days it's evolved slightly..

nantucket

A couple of weeks ago Ben and I were lucky enough to take off and head to Nantucket for a few days. It was great to get away and enjoy a little fall break full of bikes, beaches and beer (yes, beer). But my favorite activity may have actually been all of the house hunting we did.. in town, along Siasconset and on our way to Jetties and Dionis. We may not be looking to buy, but I always pretend I am!

Anyway, since it was my first time there, I took great pleasure in the island architecture, shingled capes and fabulously glossy clapboard- which obviously didn't photograph so well.. But boy did I take note of what I saw. Unfortunately I haven't done the best job at convincing Ben to incorporate all of those great details into our own home renovation (something about money), but anythings possible for house #2 (see always looking..).

Late last month this pair of pillows stole my pick of the week post (you can read it here).

Like all of my picks, I was slightly obsessed, loving the Schumacher fabric and totally convinced I had to have them. So it was no surprise that I as soon as the post was up, I broke down and ordered my sofa a pair.

Oh how I love Etsy.. I worked with Lauren from labdesigns to figure out which colorway worked best- I opted for the lacquer above, though I have to admit, the decision was tough. To say I love every version of this Chiang Mai fabric is the understatement of the year..

My poor living room had been seriously suffering, but suddenly took on new life once the pillows arrived!

The fabric was just as beautiful as I thought it would be- Lauren paired it with a great ivory linen and a fabulous, invisible turquoise zipper that works perfectly with the lacquer colorway- a really fun touch. So to say I'm thrilled with my purchase.. well maybe that's the understatement of the year!

Check out Lauren's shop- not only does she have some serious skills when it comes to the sewing machine but she also has a great eye for fabrics. I love everything from her graphic patterns, to her more traditional florals, from her cut velvet to her linen. No doubt some of these will be part of my next pillow shopping spree..

david netto, the designer

Most designers (including myself) pride themselves in being able to do lots of different styles, but there's something to say about the designer who has a very specific look. The moment I saw the Southampton home David Netto designed for friends in the October issue of House Beautiful, my immediate response was "that makes sense!" Of course Ben had no idea what I was talking about, but I'm sure most young mom's know exactly what I mean.

David Netto, as in furniture designer, has managed to dream up and manufacture the most desirable cribs there are these days. And while I haven't needed one myself, I have purchased many for past projects, and absolutely understand why they are so well loved. They're great looking and are made to last a lifetime, to be passed down from baby to baby..

The cabine collection is one of his most popular.. though the majority of his work is built out of the same contrasting materials- white lacquer and oak. So I wasn't surprised to see he used the same major elements while decorating this beautiful home..

embroidery love

It's about time I start thinking window treatments.. my poor, bare windows. Ben has been arguing that they need some love and attention for the last year or so. The only major problem is that what I want is custom and incredible pricey. So instead of spending thousands to satisfy me and my husband, I'm dreaming up less expensive ways to achieve the look I want.

"What do I want?" you ask. Embroidered, drapery panels from Holland and Sherry..

Aren't they gorgeous? If I splurged on any of these beauties we'd be forced to forgo any and all food for the next three years.

And so you can see some of their incredible work in action..

closet conundrum

Lately I've been struggling with closet space. Actually in reality, I've struggled with closet space since we moved into our house, but it's gotten far worse because my small closet has turned into no closet. Because of the new addition, the bedroom closet is being torn down and while it will be rebuilt at some point, my office is currently serving as a huge walk in.. these days I find myself slightly jealous of Ben's hall closet that has gone untouched. I guess having to get dressed in the hall for the last two years isn't looking so bad..

Recently putting together an outfit or two has become a little bit of a challenge for me since I now have clothes literally in every room of the house (I even moved a temporary chest of drawers into the living room to hold extra shorts and sweaters). You're probably thinking that girl must have A LOT of clothes but a little side note: I have kid sized dressers (my dad's from growing up) so yes, I definitely have enough clothes (as in I don't have to go to the grocery store naked), but I don't nearly have as much stuff as you think I do. It's amazing how little you can actually fit in mini sized drawers.

Anyway, so as expected, closet organization/decoration has become a very big deal to me- even though Ben insists we wont have any money to do any of that when we're done, but I can dream anyway.. of a space that looks like this..

The September/October issue of Lonny makes it look so easy. If only they had some suggestions as to how to do all of this on a very, very small (almost non existent) budget. I have a feeling putting aside a couple weekends to make custom shelving for my closet is not going to be on Ben's agenda.

I don't even need these acrylic spacers. Though it must be nice to not have to refold everything every couple of days..

I've often wondered what the best way to store my bags would be.. shelves or hooks?

Earlier this year I posted about "the happy hue"- hints of pink that make me want to re-paint every wall in my home. With all of the fabulous pink rooms from House Beautiful, I created my own pink space- a master bedroom I was sure I'd be able to get away with.. that is, without really upsetting the men in my life (Henry isn't really into "girl" colors)..

But instead, of convincing the men pink sleeping quarters wouldn't alter their manliness, all I really managed to do was become thoroughly obsessed with the rug I used.

Originally an Overstock find, unfortunately this Thomas Paul dhurrie is no longer available through a discounted site. Instead it's looking like this is going to have to be a Shades of Light purchase.

And to switch it up a bit..
Dhurries are fab in living spaces too especially when they're so graphic and make such a statement, like the one above.. the more who get to see it the better! Right? This time around I opted to go a little traditional with a sorbet-like tone instead of the pink.. a great way to bring some early fall tones into your home..

tile turmoil

I love nothing more than glossy, white tile. It's classic, clean and neutral- allowing you to change the look of a bathroom, or even a kitchen, without the hassle of re-tiling. Switch up the paint color, add some paper, buy new accessories and you've got yourself a minor renovation- one that's very easy on your bank account. But white tile doesn't necessarily mean boring tile.

Glossy white square and subway tiles aren't the only options. Switch up the grout color, mix different shape tiles, skip the traditional install- there are so many ways to make a classic finish look different.. it just so happens my current tile search is all about the Moroccan feel..

Maybe it's because our kitchen turned out so well..

Or perhaps it's my love for rooms that look like this..

These days a white subway just won't do.. except for maybe in the very budget friendly upstairs bath.

In the master I'm looking for something special- something that makes a little bit of a statement, but it has to be practical in terms of cost.

Not surprisingly I was drawn to frameworks by Artistic Tile (below) when I perused the showroom earlier this week (cut to me spotting it out of the corner of my eye and running full speed to get my hands on the sample)..

You can only imagine my disappointment (though it was hardly surprising considering my history with loving the most expensive of everything) when I discovered that it costs nearly 20 times my budget and that's without install! So, as fabulous as it is (and it really is) I'm just going to have to pretend I never saw it and hold out hope that I can find something else I love almost as much for much, much less. I hope Ben realizes that this tight tile budget (and my inability to settle) could mean we'll be without a bathroom for quite sometime..

By the way, I think it's worth mentioning that if the tile was gifted to us I would admire and rave about how fabulous it looks (to Ben and on this blog) all day long..

what i'm feeling for fall..

You're probably thinking I've absolutely lost my mind. Why else would I, the opposite of fashion-forward, start my first post of the season with the images of a blouse? Well if it makes you feel any better, it's from Old Navy (I save the big bucks for home furnishings) and I made a bee-line for it not because it's the most flattering of tops (though I'm sure I'll still add it to my wardrobe) but simply because it's the perfect example of what I'm loving for fall interiors.

Does that mean it might possibly hang in my closet until I design a room around it? I wouldn't put it past me.. but just when I started thinking about how I could pin it up on my inspiration board I discovered the incredible works of Eicker & Houghton..

Don't you just love the internet (and British design)?!? I'm so very thankful I stumbled upon their work- especially since I've been talking hunter green for quite some time and they do it just perfectly..

An article in The Telegraph shares how they decorated their pied-a-terre.. all 450 sq ft of it. With hints of yellow, dark glossy trim and a variety of greens, they've created a warm but very sophisticated space.

The layering of art, objects, styles and color is so fabulously done. It feels so collected and not too thought out.. though it always is.

patio inspiration

Our cute little patio (that took a full year to grow in and look halfway decent) has come into contact with a backhoe and to say it has seen better days is an understatement.

Usually our May through October evenings are spent outside at our house, but I've given up on outdoor dining and am considering this year a total wash. Because there is no such thing as not being inconvenienced by construction, I'm just grateful that this time it was a dining option we lost out on instead of our place of hygiene (bathroom).. but that's not to say I would have enjoyed spending the long weekend and perhaps a Labor Day cookout or two out on our patio.

In the spring we'll start over again, probably extending the patio and planting around it. I hope to build a fire pit (I really want an outdoor pizza oven but Ben doesn't believe in my pizza oven building skills) and add some seating. But until then, I'll collect inspiration and spend this holiday weekend on someone else's patio- weather permitting.

pick of the week

My pick of the week might as well be my obsession of the ~~month~~ year. It sounds dramatic, I know, but the truth is, I've been putting off buying pillows for our living room ever since I got our sofa- in March.

I haven't really had time to look, so instead of fretting over it, I opted to let the pillows come to me.. in other words, I figured I'd just happen upon them at some point. The problem is, not only did I stumble upon great pillows, but I stumbled upon great pillows I've now decided I have to have- and as usual, they're a little more than I want to spend.. figures.

The perfect pop of color without having to commit to a single tone- and they're made out of Schumacher's incredible Chiang Mai Dragon linen (above in aquamarine).

If only I could operate the sewing machine that's been sitting in my closet for the last three years, then I'd already have a pair of these 20" babies on my sofa. And they would look pretty fabulous..

some serious stickers

I have two confessions to make: 1) I have yet to even pick up September's Elle Decor and 2) I dropped the ball, yet again.

What do these two things have in common? A few weeks back I received an email from a friend, wanting to let me know about her friend Payton Cosell Turner's new venture- her very impressive (and totally brilliant) sticker wallcoverings. As usual, I was thrilled, said I'd post about it and then never did (perhaps life, work and everything in between got in my way). Now if you've actually picked up Elle Decor (mine's still staring at me from across my desk), you know exactly what I'm talking about, but if not check this out..

Apartment Therapy

Notice from the image above, Payton was featured on Apartment Therapy too- not to mention countless other blogs and magazines (hence the dropping of the ball..)

Growing up, I used to hoard my stickers, refusing to use them because they were all too pretty. Well Payton definitely doesn't hoard, instead she makes these fabulously whimsical wallcoverings- yes, I'd totally consider them art.

By mixing a variety of stickers, she makes compositions and then patterns.. creating an aesthetically pleasing wall that you just want to stare at all day long..

Perhaps if my mom had seen something like this two decades back she wouldn't have been bothered by the "wall art" my sister created when she got a hold of my treasured collection.. On the other hand it may have been more appreciated if Dena hadn't opted to apply all of my stickers to my already beautiful (and expensive) floral wallpaper. Oh well.

On a positive note- it's Monday and I've already got one post down for the week, which means I'm on a roll! I'm going to start the fall out right and try to get back into the swing of things by posting more than once every three weeks. Fingers crossed!

a trim obsession

Funny how I've practically finished our entire house and Ben has just decided to tell me he doesn't love the colorful trim look.

Now those reading this must think I'm a terrible designer and that I obviously didn't check with my "client" before picking paint colors, but in my defense, I absolutely did! I went through every color scheme with him and always got his approval (though some were more forced than others) before putting a drop of color on the trim. But, if we're being honest here, I have to admit, even if Ben was adamant about white trim, I probably would have agreed and then just waited for him to go to work one morning and made sure the color was up before he came home that night. One of the only benefits of being married to someone who cannot paint for his life is that he can't change the colors once they're up.

Now 99% of the design decisions made in our house are totally agreed upon- that is, if you ask me (Ben probably has a different number in mind), but here are some great reasons why color should definitely be considered when you're painting your own trim..

Draw attention to beautiful details..
Unfortunately not all homes can be treated the same, but if you're lucky enough to live amongst jaw-dropping details, you may want to consider letting them shine..

Compliment them with colored walls or opt for a more clean, white finish. Either way, colorful trim encourages moldings and windows to pop.

Instead of braking up colors and adding white trim (it just makes a room look busier), stick to the wall color or for slight variation pick a similar tone.

After months of threatening my friends I was going to take a trip into the city to visit (and work), I finally made it there earlier this week. Yes, it's true, when we moved in 2009 I said I'd be back a forth constantly, but between house projects, work and life, it had officially been over a year since I'd been there for a true working visit.

My trip was quick- and so easy with Amtrak! But I knew my time would be limited so I went heavily armed with an itinerary that really read more like a shopping list..

We did some major shopping at Roberta Roller Rabbit- a favorite of mine for linens and pillows..

Shopped the usual at Crate & Barrel and West Elm.. though I am loving WE's new napkin collections..

A quick stop in at William Wayne and an afternoon finishing up a job and switching around a living room floorplan..

And what is a New York City visit without a trip to the D & D Building? I shopped for fabrics with a few projects in mind and enjoyed all of the beautiful things around me.. the Brunschwig showroom is one of my favorites. I love seeing their incredibly vibrant fabrics used on furniture. I desperately wanted to take advantage of their furniture sample sale, but I was afraid getting all of the pieces I wanted (but didn't need, nor have room for) upstate would be a little challenging..

Do these beautiful pieces inspire any of you to go a little bold? How could they not?

a martyn moment

I love Million Dollar Decorators- though I'm pretty sure unless you've never read this blog before and we've never met, you probably are very much aware of my obsession with Bravo reality television. Let's be honest here, my DVR doesn't discriminate- it might as well be set to record Bravo every hour of the day- minus the infomercials, of course.

Of all of the MDD bravo-lebrities, Martyn Lawrence Bullard managed to design the interiors that I liked the least. Nothing against him or his delicious-ness, but I just didn't resonate with his schemes. I really couldn't see myself pulling anything similar together for clients- the truth is, I couldn't even really pull out singular items from any of his rooms that I could really see myself using. So I pretty much wrote him off as a designer that I admired from a business standpoint, but not really from a design direction. That was until I saw his spread in House Beautiful.

I have to admit, on many, many occasions, I can flip through a magazine and know exactly which high-profile designer was responsible for the interiors on the page- too many shelter magazines in my life, perhaps. But while going through the September issue, I had no clue who's work I was looking at- though the title probably should have given it away "Drama, Dahling." I really was shocked to see the delicacy and femininity that Bullard produced.

While the article has yet to make it onto the House Beautiful website, it intrigued me enough to look at his portfolio and I'm definitely loving these eclectic, layered looks..

Having incredible homes to work with clearly doesn't hurt the design..

building bensonhurst

For those of you who enjoy following the messy construction end of a renovation, Building Bensonhurst posts are back!

Written by my lovely husband (I have too much to do on the decorating end), I'm sure you'll appreciate his take on the whole thing- especially since he a) knows the lingo and b) doesn't have an panic attack every time something gets a little tricky- which is pretty much every step of the way. In other words, according to Ben there was "nothing major to report" about last weeks demolition, but if you asked me, I'd tell you every time the guys went at a wall with a sledge hammer or started flinging their sawzall around, I ran for cover. As for yesterdays "big dig" and knocking over of the chimney.. luckily I missed most of the action, catching only the aftermath and Ben running into the house, at full speed, to check the bathroom wall. Only telling me what had happened once he discovered the bathroom was still standing. But you can read his description of that moment here.

From the decorating end, I promise not to bore you with detailed posts about every selection. But if you want to know what my focus of the day is (other than client work) you can follow me on twitter. I'm trying to tweet about the details along the way- including where I'm getting what, what I'm thinking about/won't compromise on and what challenges have arisen.. all of which we're trying to take in stride. I must say the window selection caused a few heated discussions in our house and I ultimately ended up ordering what Ben told me not to.. but that story is for another day. Let's just say renovating/building your own home is not for the weak.. even if it's something you do for others every day of the week.

Oh and I promise to out up at least one design post later this week. I've been swamped and unfortunately the blog has suffered.

Just over a year ago my mother moved from a traditionally decorated suburban home to a small colonial on the water.. well, technically she's not really ON the water, but she's close enough that we pretend she is..

Either way there's no arguing that her new home deserves a much more relaxed and casual interior- something we've successfully achieved in her kitchen, dining room and even in the sun room. But one space she's been complaining about from day one is the living room. Unfortunately it's a good size room that's never used- and she wants to change that. With a teenager at home, it's obvious the room has been ignored because it's without a tv, but as soon as she goes off to college in three weeks time, and we give the space a bit of a dress down, I expect it will see a few more bottoms from time to time.

So here's the dilemma:
My mom had perfectly good furniture (and a very expensive custom sofa) from the old house. She was convinced she'd have to replace everything, but with just a few tweaks I think I may have convinced her her make-down really won't be all that costly.

To keep:

A black baby grand piano that was perfect in the old house, but takes up a lot of room in the new one

A gold chenille, tailored sofa

A carved bench with very tailored pillows and cushions
A skirted side table

Ignore the moving boxes- the photo above was taken during a packing day- but if you look closely you can see the gold sofa, carved wooden bench and the piano way in the back.

Not surprisingly my mom picked almost the exact same color for the walls in her new living room.. Benjamin Moore's Arizona Tan, though we brightened up her trim a little with Atrium White..

Without recovering the sofa (I just couldn't find one in the right color), I've dressed the space down by adding a solid, neutral sisal, cotton curtains and some Moroccan inspired pieces- like a new bench cushion and pillows. And by adding the dark metal of the coffee table, we're incorporating the piano into the space.

If you've made your way over to my website in the last couple of days you may have noticed our new addition- a little something I like to call Design It Yourself Decorating.

Over the years, I can't tell you how many times I've been approached at weddings, parties and in random stores and restaurants, by people who just can't put a space together themselves. I'm always asked for tips, suggestions and a little guidance as to what they can do to decorate a space without the help of a designer. I realize not everyone wants (or can afford) someone like me to pick out their sofas and throw together room schemes- nor does everyone want a perfectly coordinated space. So for them and for all the other people out there who prefer the do-it-yourself way (I'd include myself in that category), I've created DIY Decorating, something I like to consider a decorating navigational tool. By following a few simple steps and by referencing my scheme while shopping, I really believe I've created the perfect do-it-yourself decorating package.

Here's how it works.
With four looks provided (traditional, modern, eclectic and country chic), pick which style you gravitate towards. Email us with your desired scheme and in a few weeks time your scheme and the rest of your decorating package will arrive at your doorstep.

Along with the scheme you'll get designer tips that can be used in any room and for all decorating projects, directions that help you to navigate the scheme and a list of suggested sources both for those who are on a budget and those who are willing to pay a little more.

Drawn in black and white, the scheme provided is designed with flexibility in mind. Apply your own color combinations and patterns, pick between furnishing options and add whatever finishes you'd like. Our suggestions about where to apply color and pattern are included along the way (through icons), but our main goal is to make this scheme work for you- and for you to be able to make it your own.

Since we're in the "planning" stages of re-doing the entire exterior of our house, I wonder if there's still time to make it look more like this..

the ruthie sommers collection

Ruthie Sommers' Los Angeles home is a favorite of mine- and it's not just because she, too, gives her daschund free range on the furniture.. look familiar?

Except that Sommers' home is very much finished (and styled) and Henry's favorite spot is unfortunately in the very unfinished corner of my living room. Oh well.

Featured in Lonny's July/August issue, perhaps Ruthie Sommers' love for her daschund (and her display of it) makes me admire her style even more. Though I have to say, it's her overall sense of layered collection, and the uniqueness of it all that I truly admire.

Starting with a historical home, she filled it with classical elements- almost encouraging it's age and history- in a not-run-down kind of way. And the end result is a wonderful mix of layered pieces, that only make me feel like all of my "collecting" through the years was with absolute purpose and is definitely the way to go.

Sommers' use of DeGournay is elegant and hardly stuffy. I only wish I had my own DeGournay filled walls..

Adding the abstract art on top is so something I would do.

The living room is the perfect combination of collection and comfort..

Her surface area is overflowing with interesting finds, great coffee table books and wonderful art..

With a similar aesthetic in my house, some may argue I'm just trying to find places to put things, but I just don't see it that way!

Her "Red Room" is rich with pattern and color..

I love the collection of pillows, as if each one was found and placed there for a specific reason. No need to plan every piece. It's so much more fun (and meaningful) to find over time. Something I not only preach, but I also practice!

Wisteria's newest catalog (complete with a semi annual sale) arrived in my mailbox yesterday. While there are some great finds, this is a bit of a head scratcher..

In the catalog described the plywood chair above as comfortable, but I just don't see it.

What I'm love, LOVING is their collection of oversized, glass candlesticks- all of which would be a fabulous addition to the top of my china cabinet. I layer glass pieces above to give it height and (obviously) for more storage..

This green bone-inlay chest is way more fun than the usual black..

At 11:00am every weekday, without fail, my inbox, like most, fills with daily sales from The Foundary, One Kings Lane and Joss and Main. Yes, I love me a good sale and have clearly had much luck in all departments, from design books, furniture, accessories and even stationary. But this morning's Joss & Main sale made me want to cringe- and reconsider my "exclusive" membership (that anyone can sign up for) all together. But hey, who am I to judge? Maybe a globe bar is the new hot item for the fall and I just haven't gotten the memo yet..

I really haven't been myself lately- I feel like I've been off my game. With a thousand things going on at the moment my office has seen better days.. I'll spare you the details, but my bulletin boards are filled with half-thought out schemes, waiting for my next light bulb to go off..

Bad pictures, yes, and it isn't even all there yet. My scheming process is simple- I let it come to me.. and unfortunately, not everything has made it's way to my brain (or my boards) yet. The top is our new master and hall and the bottom is my new office- which you may be able to tell has been seriously neglected. I could lie and say I know exactly what I'm doing, but the truth is, I still am not entirely sure what I want.. I don't know what it is about us decorators.. doing someone else's house is just so much easier!

So you might be asking why it is that I already have scheme boards for rooms that don't yet exist (we haven't filed for our permit yet)- well the answer is.. Ben's out bidding the job, he wanted a lighting plan and unfortunately I can't place lighting without knowing where everything else is going.. So yes, I guess I could have skipped on the paint colors (many of which are still somewhat undecided) and stuck to just the floor plans. But what fun is that? Anyway, I can't quite turn off that part of my brain anyway- furniture placement and colors pretty much go hand in hand if you ask me.

On another note- once my sister Dena and I hung up after our first phone call yesterday (we had three), I realized we forgot to talk about the Tuesday night Bravo line up! So naturally, I called her back. I'll admit it, I'm not crazy about the decor that Million Dollar Decorator has been putting out.. I wouldn't hire any of them to do my house (obviously I'd hire myself!), but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love Mary McDonald and all of her snarky comments. She and her purse drinking is a new favorite of mine. Simply put- she's crazy. I'm beginning to think I'm crazy. So we should be friends.

And finally, the SPAC Gala Lawn Party is next Saturday, July 9th- just in case you haven't seen it on Facebook. With the Junior Committee hosting, the decorating committee is in full force (cut to fabric samples, flowers and china flying everywhere). Yes, it's true, I've already sketched out our table decor- this is a competition after all and there's no way I'm having the ugliest table on the lawn. So while I may think that I'm slowly losing my mind (and Ben continues to tell me that I'm "acting out"), it's all good stuff- so there are no complaints here!

Since it's been a while I wanted to make sure my next "pick of the week" was a good one.. and this definitely is! Ballard Designs paulette server is available in sections, meaning you can make it as long or short as your space needs it to be. Below it can be seen as a triple..

It's clean lines, ample space and fabulous color are what really get me going about this piece, but I'm also loving details like the long pulls, arched top and of course.. the contrast of the white. And this is exactly how I'd use it..

courteney's space

And finally, the last leg of the Friends tour.. Courteney Cox's recently renovated Malibu home.

Featured in the July issue of Elle Decor and designed by Trip Haenisch, Courteney's space has a simple, airy- opposite of Jennifer's deep, warm tones. But with the use of modern furnishings and clean lines, both homes definitely emulate their more masculine tastes..

I must say I absolutely love her used of slate floors throughout the home. It helps to create a really nice flow from room to room- and perhaps more importantly.. it makes for easy clean up after a sandy visit to the beach!

Crisp white walls and cabinets take over the kitchen, with a hint of dark metals and fabulous vintage barstools..

The California lifestyle absolutely encourages indoor/outdoor living, so I'm loving these wall to ceiling walls of windows..

Some great bedroom shots.. Great angles but even better vintage finds (love the master bedroom desk below..)

A great mix of metal, wood and stone finishes in the master bathroom below.. with a hint of upholstery of course!

When pictures of Jennifer Aniston's home, published in Architectural Digest, started circling the internet, I have to admit, I was a little shocked. First let me say, she's one of my favorite- she exudes coolness, but even more importantly than that, it seems like she's just tons of fun to be around (and it doesn't hurt that she's a dog lover too). She's often dressed down in jeans and a t-shirts, wearing funky jewelry and a great bag and she can easily pull off bohemian chic in a wonderfully streamlined way. So, to be honest, I thought her home would resemble her fashion choices a little more- something I'd like to refer to as tailored-bohemian-well traveled-eclectic decor. I should also point out she's well seasoned when it comes to architecture and interiors, so she (with help from her designer, Steven Shadley) obviously knows what she's doing.

So yes, I was terribly wrong- serves me right for assuming I'd know how my "good friend Jen" would furnish her home. Instead of colorful patterns and white upholstery, she stuck to lots of wood tones, natural stone and very streamlined, but incredibly warm pieces.. a far cry from Monica and Rachel's New York City apartment..

The views and the interior/exterior flow sells me on this house.. hands down..

Her bedroom takes on a more minimalistic look with it's low bed and angular furnishings..

And now.. to create an Aniston inspired space of your own. Of course, the more wood paneling and stone work you pair it with, the better!

a friends living room

With Elle Decor's release of Courteney Cox's home in their July issue, it's no surprise that blogs and online magazines are over-covering the story. Yes, she's made headlines recently with her amicable split with David Arquette, but I'm pretty sure her home's all the rage due to her career, popularity.. and the fact that her BFF (Jennifer Aniston) has also made the shelter magazine rounds (remember Architectural Digest in March of last year?)

So instead of being a bore and covering her renovations like everyone else, I thought I'd mix it up a bit. With both AD and ED covering the friends, why not talk about similarities, differences and where it all began..

One of my mom's favorite stories about my sister, Dena, was when they were visiting me while I was abroad in Italy. In Rome, my mom walked into our hotel room one night and caught Dena laughing hysterically at a friends rerun- in Italian. She had watched every episode, so many times, that the language barrier was nothing- she already knew exactly what each character was saying. That's how much she loves friends- and I have to admit, I'm not that far behind.

And for the record I was WAY more devastated over the end of Friends than Oprah- even the Real Housewives of New York City doesn't fill the Thursday night tv void that Friends left 7 years ago. Oh how I miss those weekly gatherings Monica and Rachel's apartment. A space filled with eclectic finds, worn furnishings and the purple paint job I tired of by season four..

No, not my style at all, but oh how I love it.. mis-matched painted furniture and all.

Their apartment was pretty much where both Courteney and Jennifer began their careers and their friendship, but from what I've seen it doesn't look to me like their design aesthetic was influenced at all by the set's flea market finds. Looking to create a Friends feel of your own, but with an updated twist??

Please excuse my lack of posts.. my plate is very full these days. While my design posts have been few and far between, I thought I'd share some things I've been working on- at least the ones I can tell you about!..

The SPAC Gala Lawn Party
The Gala Lawn party is always a great event at SPAC, but this year it promises to be even better since the Junior Committee has taken over. On July 9th, invite your friends, pack your best picnic and go to town with your table decor, because this is definitely a competition (though still a friendly one). Watch (or not) the ballet and then party after with a band, fireworks and other fabulous displays. Tickets are $50.00 a person and can be purchased here.

Look out for table and tent rentals offered through SPAC to make it even easier for you. With linens included all you have to worry about is the food and a jaw-dropping centerpiece. While this is not at all my planned decor (I would never give that away).. a few great tabletop items to get your juices flowing..

Fabrics
Yes, it's true, I just couldn't help myself.. and jumped into another project. At the moment I'm working on a chain link fabric that can be customized (or not) with monograms and initials..

I'm also working on some other fun prints that have yet to be finalized.. but check back because they will be available for purchase!

Our House
As I mentioned in this post, Ben and I are adding on to our house a bit.. and the project is moving along. As to be expected, it's a lot more complicated than we first thought so a lot of problem solving has had to be done (on the architects end) and it turns out the layout will differ slightly than what we had originally thought. But I'm hardly surprised, after all.. when to projects ever go exactly as planned?!?
Once the digging gets underway and the color schemes are finalized (they've already been picked but are pending Ben's approval), I'll post more..

In the meantime, on to paying client's and their homes!!

million dollar decorators

Before I get started, keep in mind, just in case you didn't already know, I am a true lover of the Real Housewives franchise.. and all Bravo reality tv for that matter. Yes, sometimes the unnecessary drama and bad adult behavior irks me, but all in all, I love peeking into other people's lives- seeing how they live and what they make of life. Now chances are, if you don't love reality tv as much as I do, then you won't like Million Dollar Decorators.. so you should probably stop reading now.

I did manage to read a few responses to last nights show this morning- some good, some horribly bad, some I agreed with, some I would like to argue. So without further ado- my reaction to last nights decorating drama!

First, let me say, yes, all of the designers that Bravo picked are high profile, often published and are all around well respected in the industry, but since I am Manhattan bred, they are hardly my design celebrities. Don't get me wrong, they all do incredible work- and obviously have great "reality" personalities, but put Charlotte Moss, Bunny Williams and Albert Hadley (to name a few) on Bravo and I'm pretty sure you'd find me drooling in front of the screen every Tuesday night at 10.

But, with that said, my favorite of the Bravo bunch is absolutely Kathryn Ireland- her work is unique and her fabric line is furiously used by just about every design guru out there. Perhaps you didn't know her or her incredible talent before MDD, but chances are you've seen her Ojai house.. currently owned by Reese Witherspoon..

I'd say chances are Kathryn will come off being the nicest of the group- but really what was she thinking when you had a dinner party (of decorators) and had her sons cook? You would not believe the chaos that goes on in my house when my mother or sisters come to visit (the most forgiving and least judgemental of them all), let alone a group of design professionals! I'm guessing she's not a taurus.

My first comment when seeing Mary McDonald was that she re-decorated her office! Perhaps the image below (from Domino) looks familiar to some of you..

Unfortunately I can't find a shot of her new space (it's very common for designers to re-decorate as soon as something has been published), but chances are you'll be seeing lots of it if you're already hooked- like me. I have read that some felt she came off badly (by the way I've NEVER worked for a designer who actually liked a piano in a room and designers of that caliber more often than not consider clients' homes their own) and this is where I have to disagree, but more on that later.

Jeffrey Alan Marks- whenever I hear that name the image that pops in my head is the rowboat hanging from his bedroom ceiling..

His design is playful, he seems fun.. and surprisingly lets others chime in on the design- even though their opinions aren't always invited. I feel like we just got a taste of his work, and more importantly his work atmosphere.. so I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Because Martyn Lawrence Bullard was shown in the throws of installing Sharon Osbourne's Hollywood apartment, I thought I'd share an image of her Los Angeles living room- published in Architectural Digest..

I loved the chaos that was shown on screen.. boy have I been there- with principle designers yelling to paint, finish and install projects in a negative amount of time. It is no fun (especially with wet paint on the walls), but it is oh so true when your clients have ridiculous expectations and principles don't know how to say no.

And finally, Nathan Turner.. love him and his store! The image below stands out as a favorite of mine..

The color combo and layered look are favorites of mine.. so much so that I've been known to use both myself. You can tell that Nathan's passion is really his store- and the best part about it is that you don't even have to be in LA to shop his inventory. Check out his 1st Dibs store here. I'm guessing everything will be snatched up pretty quickly with the success of Million Dollar Decorators.

So here's the question- do designers, like those on the show, make all of the other decorators in the world look bad? And is the show really reality? From experience, I'd have to say no and yes (in that specific order)- and while some other decorators/bloggers out there disagree, this is my take..

These designers work for and are hired by the wealthiest people in the country. Their clients' hire them to do everything- from top to bottom, spending their money as they please, so the client can literally show up one day to a fabulous space- without even having to do a thing. No, not all designers run around spending clients money like it's nothing, because the majority of us don't have clients that can afford or want that.. but speaking from experience, when you do have a client who trusts your taste and let's you shop as you please.. it's a lot of fun..

With that said, the show is absolutely reality- for those select few who have clientelle of that caliber. Yes, there are always outbursts about paint colors and premature furniture installations. Spending thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of dollars on rugs, lighting, art, and accessories is normal for some (though very few) and when you spend that kind of money on one thing, imagine how quickly a design budget hits the million dollar mark. These are creative minds who have found success in the industry, so it's not unusual for them to take extreme pride (and some ownership) of their work- not to mention turn down a job or two due to too much work or a lack of funds.. it sounds horrible, but any smart business person would say that a job has to be worthwhile in order for them to take it. And yes, there are points during the show that the designers sound obnoxious and praise themselves way too much, but you must remember these are the next bravolebrities after all.. and they were absolutely cast for a reason.

But just to be clear- especially for those who are wary of designers to begin with.. let me re-iterate. These are a very select few designers that the majority will never work with or even for. So, if you're looking for "reality" in terms of the highest end of the design industry, you got it, but remember, the rest of us designers have nothing in common with Kathryn Ireland, Mary McDonald, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Jeffrey Alan Marks and Nathan Turner- other than perhaps a passion for design.

a room to love

After seeing the June issue of Elle Decor, my sister, Dena, suggested Keri Russell's Brooklyn kitchen should be considered for "a room to love" post and I totally agree. I don't think I'm the only designer out there who dreams of having a live in carpenter/furniture maker. While my husband is very capable of building a shelf or two (after some trial and error), building kitchen cabinets, like the ones below, will most likely never be on his to-do list. I imagine him only taking on a project like that if he retired, had all the time in the world and we didn't really need a kitchen. But lucky Keri Russell (for more reasons than I care to list) her husband is quite skilled with tools and reclaimed woods.

I just wish there were more images of details available- like the wooden paneled, soffit-like structure to the left, below..

Here are some other amazing details to consider- the original, raw, brick fireplace and a wonderful mix of woods. The perfect hint of metals and stone and great natural lighting softened by simple curtain panels. But most importantly, in my book, fabulous lighting that draws the eye up and takes full advantage of their incredible high ceilings.

a little personal project

In the last week or so much of my concentration has been spent on a very big project I have coming my way.. an addition to our home. While we are still in the planning stages I have been furiously working on picking out finishes since we are in a bit of a time crunch- though the crunch is for no particular reason other than that we've decided to do it all as quickly as possible.

With the addition of two bathrooms, a master bedroom, a loft living area and an upstairs laundry (the thing I am absolutely most excited for!) I certainly have my hands full- and that's all on top of client work! Without the luxury of time, decisions have to be made and luckily for me, I'm very quick to make one. Earlier this week I took a trip to Aird Dorrance, and in a half an hours time fixtures for both bathrooms were picked and purchased. So in about four or five months we'll have two new bathrooms that look just like the two schemes below (master to the left, laundry bath to the right)..

I would get going on paint colors but I've been told it's a little premature for that.. since we haven't even gotten the architectural drawings yet (let alone permits). But I do have some good news for the neighbors.. while we've been talking about it since we moved in (almost two years ago) we are finally moving forward with an overhaul of the exterior! For planning purposes it obviously made sense to wait and do it all at once, so I've been very patient, but am definitely ready for the outside of the house to look as good as the inside does! I'll keep you posted on the project progress, but in the meantime I should get back to paying clients!!

the miller house

Unfortunately I wasn't able to catch all of yesterday's CBS Sunday Morning's annual Design Issue, but the parts I did catch definitely didn't disappoint..

From golf cart design (Ben and I are already planning our retirement around a golf cart hot rod of our own), to the Sydney Opera House (we were lucky enough to be able to experience it ourselves, though I had not known all of the interesting architectural history attached to it), to home staging and it's wonderful benefits (a service I offer!) Of course there were also segments featuring fashion and product design- but it was the view of Miller house, a home designed by the famed architect, Eero Saarinen, in the 1950s for J. Irwin Miller that was a huge treat to see..

Declared a National Historic Landmark, in 2008 the Miller family donated the home, complete with it's furnishings, to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Not surprisingly complete with a signature Saarinen conversation pit..

Anyone who follows design knows the work of Saarinen well. Most of us have coveted his dining table and tulip chairs below from time to time.

Some architectural details below..

While heavily influenced by Saarinen, the home was actually decorated by interior designer Alexander Girard. The patterns and textiles throughout were developed by Girard and his influence can be seen throughout the home..

I'm sure design bloggers are all going crazy posting about Oprah's visit to the Double RL ranch- Ralph Lauren's vast property in Telluride, Colorado. But before I start, let me say that the show was originally scheduled to air last Wednesday afternoon- when I was at Brimfield. Obviously I made sure to DVR it in my absence but when Time Warner came and replaced our cable box on Friday morning and I realized I had yet to see the show I was practically emotionally distraught. I literally went online to see if I could order a tape from Oprah herself (unfortunately the show cannot be viewed in entirety on her website) when (thankfully!) I learned that for some odd reason the show had been pushed to this week.. (sigh of relief) You may all think I've lost my mind but I know I'm definitely not the only one that went through an emotional roller-coaster when they thought they had missed the rare opportunity to peek into RL's home!

So onto the ranch- but not without more commentary of course!

Yes, the ranch itself fascinated me- in it's beauty and serene existence. The Lauren family spoke about how much they loved the land and felt an incredible sense of spirituality there. All of which I'm sure is true- the land really does look incredible, though I definitely am not one to dream of living on a ranch..

I am, however, absolutely fascinated with RL's empire and all that he has created. I soaked up every word he said. And I do absolutely dream of having a home with just as many incredible layers to it..

Perhaps I'd steer away from the Navajo-esque motif (since I won't be living among the mountains), but, just as Oprah said.. "every where you lay your eyes there's something more interesting to see" and that's exactly what I've said all along.. that's the kind of living I love- layered.

So many try to replicate this look of old and worn and RL made a point of saying that everything is so much more comfortable once it's been used and lived in (do you think that's why Dylan put her cowboy boots up on the leather sofa??). Maybe all of us with crazy OCD, who's husbands refuse to sit on the sofa without the "protection" of a blanket underneath with a fear of getting the upholstery dirty should consider those words to live by.. though, in my defense, my husband came to that practice all by himself.

And while I'm sure many won't be too surprised.. the Double RL Ranch is complete with five incredible teepees- all jaw-droppingly decorated.

RL said you have to be invited to stay in one of his teepee masterpieces, but I wonder.. if you are afforded that luxury, where do you go to the bathroom?

Some final thoughts..
Ralph Lauren is an absolute inspiration- I hope one day, no matter which way my business grows, I feel his sense of pride and happiness (I know I have the ambition!). Dreaming, he said and the ability to not give up your hope, at any age is very important. Thankfully it's looking like our new cable box will be sticking around so I can scan his great room, dining room and the teepees in slow motion as many times as I want..

When it comes to working in the design industry, whether it be as a designer, manufacturer or publisher, having a stylish office is practically an unwritten law.. and not without reason- who would ever take design advice from someone who works in a dull, lifeless space? Luckily for all of us Lonny readers, their office definitely stands up to the task and thankfully we can now continue to flip through the pages of their e-mag with great confidence that they know what they're doing! With a fun mix of high and low items, the people over at Lonny have managed to create not only a chic work space but it looks to be seriously functional as well..

With a hint of Ikea throughout, I'm really loving their double length white desks below..

There is so much UGLY outdoor furniture out there I was thrilled to when I finally made my way through the Home Decorators Collection catalog. Not only do they have some great, not so expensive options, but they've teamed up with Home Depot to get the word out on the Martha Stewart collection and as per usual, her stuff isn't so bad! In fact, I would actually consider using some of it on my own patio- which is just about the biggest compliment anyone can get from me!

my living room sneak peek

A few weeks ago I promised to post my updated living room scheme. Like all projects it has definitely evolved over the last year or so, due to lots of fun, unexpected purchases.. It just proves you can buy what you love and it will work!

While the new doesn't differ too greatly from the original in feel, the one thing that it is lacking is color. I love color, but I find that in larger living spaces I like the ability to switch it in and out as I please. That may change as life evolves but at the moment I'm feeling vibrant pillows, throws and art are just perfect for me. And since I haven't really gotten there yet (I'm still holding out hope that I may be able to make my own pillows one day.. soon) at least you know how it's evolving at the moment.

a website overhaul

I know last week I promised an update on our living room scheme, but instead I have a little announcement of sorts, meaning the scheming will have to wait..

Leah Margolis Design has been needing a website update for quite some time now and finally we've gotten it! Complete with new portfolio pictures, an updated "shop" and even an online art gallery with original works by me and others, I hope you'll all enjoy perusing it all.

Ben and I spent Sunday night, correction- Sunday night and Monday morning, in the Emergency Room. It's a long story that ends happily for Ben with just a few stitches and no major injuries, but for me, not quite as well since chances are I will now forever be the official family dishwasher.

Anyway, leave it to me, during our 6 hour stay, to notice the art on the Emergency Room walls. There were two pieces I was drawn to immediately and as soon as I got closer I knew why. Elisa Sheehan was the artist, a local painter who's work I have loved ever since I first spotted it at the House of Creative Soul art gallery. I love her brush strokes and the texture the create. The colors are spot on- for my house at least.. I love the combinations of green and blues with a hint of warmer tones. The scale and proportion is just right.. but you don't need to hear it from me.. see for yourself..

a room to love

When doing "research" I often flip through all of my shelter mags and find a single room in an entire story that really speaks to me and I have to be honest, it often disappoints me. I always prefer to post entire homes, only omitting one or two non-essential rooms to prevent reader boredom. I've always thought you get a better sense of where the designer was going and what they were loving at the moment if you see how their work flows through a home. But more recently I've found myself drawn to a specific room in the home and while that's not to say there aren't other areas I like, it just happens to be the one room I LOVEEEE. My reactions are typical- a quick flip through and as soon as it registers it's an immediate flip back, with an eye opening stare (and sometimes a little drool) while I study and study and study the space.

So I've decided I'm no longer going to keep these rooms to myself just because I don't have the rest of the home to back my decision up- instead I'm going to share.. and you're going to love it!

This weeks eye opening space is by Markham Roberts and can be seen with the rest of the home in House Beautiful's May issue or online here. Now keep in mind, I love all of his work (this isn't one of those homes where everything is hideous except for this one room).. the home is beautiful, but this if this family room was local to Saratoga Springs, there's no doubt I'd seek it out, make friends with the home owner, plop myself down on the sofa and make my way through every book in the bookshelves.

In my opinion, a well rounded room, one with a very livable look shares all of the same elements as Roberts' family room above..texture, color, pattern and fabulous architectural elements that are given "permission" to take center stage. My heart melts.

wills and kate are stealing my thunder

Saturday marks my last birthday in my 20s, but let's be real.. who really cares with the royal wedding having taken place this morning? And not surprisingly, I'm happy to hand them the spotlight- I even feel a little sorry for Kate having been an awkward and uncomfortable bride myself. I can't even imagine how she's preparing herself for this huge event.. I was quite the nervous bride myself, having to walk down the aisle in front of so many people and our guest list was a tenth of what hers is.. and that's not including all of the millions of viewers at home!

While Kate's wedding dress selection has been all the rage in the last few months, I'm not really concerned with it, though it was an excellent choice in my book! Instead I much prefer to talk (and post) decorative details and with the Buckingham Palace as the backdrop very little is needed to make their reception(s) fabulous. As always I prefer simplicity, especially in such an iconic setting, so I took it upon myself to create my own interpretation of a modern day royal celebration. Now keep in mind there's nothing symbolic below, no royal colors or British China (I can't help myself but go French). This is, by no means, a truly royal table setting, but instead something I think a sophisticated and well-to-do young couple would opt for.. sticking with the elegance while bringing in some more contemporary elements..

And the best part of it all? Lose the palace and this would also make for a lovely 29th birthday celebration.. though it's hardly fits into my birthday budget.

And just in case you were wondering.. yes, I did make sure not to miss all of the royal hoopla this morning (not quite a 4am wake up call, but pretty close) and no, even with the Buckingham and Kensington Palaces, exotic vacations and elegant dresses and all of those tiaras.. I still definitely don't think "it should have been me."

I do, though, wish both William and Kate the happiest of marriages and perhaps even more importantly than that.. years of peace and quiet!

I often wonder why I always make things so difficult for myself.. Truth be told, there are many days when I wish I could simply walk into a store and find exactly what I'm looking for. But to say that rarely happens is a huge understatement.. and more often than not I turn my dream "furnishing" into a DIY project.

Unfortunately, my most recent obsession (the kind that consumes your every thought.. thinking about where you can find it, what specific elements it should have and how much you're willing to spend if it's exactly what you want) are Asian inspired Chippendale dining chairs. A week or two ago I decided that a set of six is exactly what the doctor ordered for my living room.. the only problem is what I want doesn't seem to exist.. especially not on my tight budget. My perfect chair is inspired by the collection below.. a simple combination of them all.. with a little tweaking and my personal spin, of course.

It took me a while, but I finally took the time to go through the stack of catalogs I've been collecting for the last few weeks. It's amazing how quickly they pile up when you're busy with other things!

As usual there was much of the same, but I was happy to see Pottery Barn's new offerings in the art department. They have some really great prints this season. I especially love the architectural options- both in forms of sketches and photographs. But I'm also loving the chair print options below..

Yes, it's true, not everyone appreciates the beauty in a fabulous chair, but I sure do!

brimfield is coming!
It's that time of year again- so strap on those shopping shoes! Brimfield is the biggest antique show around and if you like going vintage a fraction as much as I do you should probably take the trip. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! I posted about some of last years finds here.

This shopping event, and it really is an event, starts May 10th and goes for 5 days. Don't worry if those May dates don't work for you because the vendors return again in July and September. Check out their website for more info.

cue the coral

Spring has sprung.. or at least it should have by now. At the moment nothing is putting me in a more spring-like mood than coral. No, not the "under the sea" coral, but the color. In recent days I've been thinking of ways I can sneak a little of that cheer into my living room- without Ben noticing.. of course!

Normally I wouldn't be so secretive, but earlier this month I asked if he'd prefer navys or corals on our new sofa- both colors I love and would have been happy to live with until he picked navy. Now, not surprisingly, I'd much prefer coral!

So I've been looking for the perfect coral throw pillows everywhere with no success (life would be so much easier if I could sew my own!), but I've definitely been spotting some great options on Etsy..

trad home and decorating myths

As promised a recap (and review of sorts) of Trad Home, Traditional Home's collaboration with the very popular e-magazine, Lonny..

I've found over the last few months that many (if not all) of these new internet sensations have taken on a more relaxed side of the traditional print shelter magazines. It's like they all want to be Domino. I understand Lonny's thinking, since the founders did technically come from Domino's staff, but I'm not sure why Traditional Home needs to take that route. Either way, there were definitely some contributions that I appreciated, but my favorite of all, was reading "10 things my mother told me."

Ok so maybe it wasn't really your mother who was filling your creative mind with bad decorating advice, but either way this collaborative article is filled with some great stuff I think everyone should read. Like I've said, there are no rules and this proves me right!

Trad Home asked ten designers to share pieces of bad advice shared through the years. Some items worth mentioning..
Schuyler Samperton's "keep small spaces simple." Sometimes more furniture makes a room look bigger- as long as it's used wisely and the scale is right.

Suzanne Kasler's "Don't mix your spaces." The traditional living, dining and private quarters may have worked decades ago, but these days people are scaling down and looking for more multi functional spaces.

And one I've been known to repeat over and over.. Edie Ross' "don't save your china for special occasions." Enjoy all of your beautiful things- even if your meal is only mediocre!

There are so many I would add, but my top three myths in decorating (all of which I've posted at one time or another) are..
"Always use odds." Sometimes two really is better than three..

Tory Burch

"Bold colors make a room look smaller." Color definitely adds drama to what could otherwise be a boring space, but by painting trim and doors the wall color, the space is more fluid and appears spacious.

Todd Romano

"Don't mix metals." Mixing metals adds layers and depth to a space- and it allows you to collect pieces without having to worry about finishes.

I probably shouldn't be surprised that Traditional Home has jumped on the e-magazine bandwagon. It seems like if you want to make it in publishing these days you have to change with the times, and in their case incorporate a web magazine. I am happy to say, at this point, that the product of their collaboration with Lonny does not seem to be replacing their decades old print magazine.. but we never really know until they fold, do we? pick of the week

If an egg chair upholstered in a normal, solid fabric is cool, what word could you possible use to describe the cowhide version below?? I probably shouldn't admit that I was literally drooling over it when first spotted on the Design Within Reach website..

While this modern version of a chair is usually paired with contemporary furnishings, the cowhide gives it a more well-rounded look. So I opted to use it in a master mixed with ethnic and modern elements, but with a little bit of a traditional flair..

My readers and clients alike know how much I stress the importance of art. It's amazing how a bare wall can ruin a space by making it look unfinished and bland. And to be honest, there are so many incredible ways to incorporate art that there's no reason to leave it out.

Today I'm focusing on photography- for a few reasons really. The first is, a photograph has the incredible ability to take us back to a special place. Whether it's a personal image or one purchased in a gallery, we really react when something is captured in a very specific moment. Secondly, photography is an incredible medium and it really doesn't get enough credit. Consider this- a single view can be seen and captured in an endless amount of ways and it's all based entirely on the photographers eye. Then once taken, an image can be printed thousands of different ways- while some may consider color vs. black and white that's really just the beginning. And finally, I'm guest posting on Tory's blog. Obviously I'm not going to write about oil paintings..

The most common way to display a photograph is by making it the focal point of a room..

While many don't consider enlarging their images, a photograph that's too small and doesn't take up enough wall space can look funny, out of place and is unpleasing to the eye. Blowing up an image- no matter what it is, makes a huge statement and it really becomes the most important aspect of the room.

Embrace awkward spacing and architectural elements with art..

Do you own a piece of furniture that creates a major void of space? Perhaps you have an awkward corner or nook in your home. While many think it's best to ignore such spaces, I'd encourage you to think otherwise. Always embrace- after all, with an incredible photograph you have the opportunity to turn a confusing wall into something interesting and beautiful.

Gallery style is all the rage these days..

A stair wall or any large expanse of a wall for that matter is a wonderful place to display. Smaller pieces, hung sporadically, can make the space look empty and unfinished, while hanging a variety of sizes, floor to ceiling, gives the area not only interest, but it also makes it look much grander than it actually is. While you can easily mix up your subject matter, this is also a great place to hang all of those family or wedding photos you've been storing.

Incorporate photographs into wall art..

Don't just assume that your images need a solid backdrop to standout. Above a hand painted mural only enhances the beauty of the photographs- while taking up additional space. With a detailed background you have the ability to hang the images further apart allowing them to cover more ground.

Mix it up a bit..

Photographs don't have to stand on their own. Mix it up by grouping them with other meaningful items, clocks or mirrors. Using a variety of frames, sizes and finishes only adds depth to a space.

Stacking and grouping to create the statement..

Just as larger sized images make a big impact, so do groupings. The photographs above would be lost if not for stacking them. And the grouping below creates drama and easily finishes off the space..

When installed in a more organized manner (like above), it is important that the images are cohesive and the same size, but that does not mean all of the images have to be similar. Instead, consider using one frame style and images that are in the same color family.

Layering for flexibility (perfect for the commitment phobe)..

Whether done as a focal point or as an accent, layering frames and photographs is a fun way to switch it up. Some have a hard time putting holes in the walls, others have an incredible collection and prefer to be able to change images out constantly. While mantels and desks are great places to do this, also consider layering in bookshelves, on window sills and in cabinets.

Lack of wall space is no excuse..

Tight quarters, walls filled with windows, too much furniture, they can all be worked around! While hanging art on a bookshelf isn't always the most functional, there's no arguing it looks fabulous. And when you don't have any other walls to work with it really is a great way to display.

Prefer not to install on? Propping or hanging photographs on the top of bookshelves gives serious height to a room- drawing the viewers eye up.
And finally, one of my favorites..

What would have otherwise been a bland space (with incredible light), now has the best of both worlds. A window art installation is creative, dramatic and incredibly fun!

Keep in mind when picking an image have fun and be creative. Go with something that reminds you of a special time in your life whether it be an event or a special destination. Make sure it invokes happy thoughts and gives off good energy!

big spending

Since you all love knowing what's going on in my house, I thought it was only fair to share all of the action my credit card has been receiving in the couple of weeks. When it rains it pours and recently it might as well have been flooding in the home decorating department. If Ben had his way it would be pouring at the local bike shop, but while he's been thinking about all of the great places he could ride to on a new mountain bike, I couldn't help but argue our money is better spent on something that can seat more than one person. I know what you're thinking.. and no, we didn't get a tandem.

purchase of the month/year
Our sofa has lived a very long and happy life, but two weeks ago I decided it had to go. I know puppies and majorly upholstered pieces of furniture typically don't mesh, but when I get my mind set on something.. anyway Lulu is really well behaved when she's not in her crate.

So with a sofa purchase in the horizon I did a little research, got a few quotes, and less than 48 hours after a decisions was made, I walked into Calico Corners (for an entirely different reason) I spotted the perfect sofa on display.. and luckily for me, it was on serious clearance. I mean who doesn't love to pay less than half price for a really fabulous, well made piece?!

The only downside? It's a little light- not for my liking, but for my living.. figures that that didn't stop me. So the first thing I did after I scheduled delivery was make an appointment for it to be Scotchgarded. Now our new sofa will (hopefully) live an even longer life than the one it's replacing.

auction action
Last Sunday Ben and I made the trip to Manchester to go to another great Nathan auction. We didn't go too crazy in the bidding department, but it wasn't due to lack of goods. I would have had some serious fun if our house was just a little bit bigger.. But we still came home with a few really great pieces that I was thrilled to add to our growing collection..

This intricate brass table was my favorite purchase of them all. It needs a good cleaning- and will definitely get one as soon as the rain stops and the warm spring weather finally kicks in..

This great marble table was Ben's pick and I loved the sketch below too much to pass up..

curtain call
Ever since I started pulling together schemes for our house I envisioned a floor to ceiling shower curtain in our bathroom. Like much of what I do (especially in my own house) whenever I mentioned my "plan" to any one they often thought I was crazy- and kept asking how I could possibly do that.. Well, I did and I'm thrilled.

Of course I could have gone custom, but it just wasn't in the budget. Not to mention installing a custom shower curtain when I haven't even figured out window treatments yet doesn't really sound right. Instead I ordered a ceiling track and opted to use a catalog drapery panel as the actual curtain- making sure, of course, that it's machine washable. Some altering had to be done (and will have to be redone once I figure out how to maneuver my sewing machine), so I'm still kind of considering this a temporary fix until I do it the right way. But either way, it works.. and believe it or not, Ben likes it just as much as I do!

pick of the week

I'm loving this weeks pick of the week for it's glamorous look and its smaller size..

I know, I know.. I go on and on about the bigger lighting the better, but there's something very special about a piece like the one below- maybe because of all fixtures, this is the one you actually expect to be used in a big way..

Ok so 14" in diameter isn't actually that small, but while a chandelier like the one above is often found in a more formal living space, this Ballard Designs Camile Chandelier is actually perfect for a bathroom, dressing room or even a bedroom. I've used it in a feminine study below..

a mirrored bar

A little mirror can go a long way.. while adding a whole lot of punch to a room. Mirrored furniture has quite the reputation- think feminine and glamorous, but it can also be functional when added to a small, dark space. I love the idea of tricking the eye by brightening up a room and making it feel a little less crowded, simply by introducing a few mirrored pieces into the floorplan.

I'm used to scoping out pretty pricey mirrored pieces so I have to say I was really thrilled to see some of the new options over at Home Decorators Collection. Mirror definitely isn't a new aesthetic for them- they've been showing it for a while, but these new options are still pretty exciting!

If you ask me, any of these sideboards would make a fabulous bar..

Even though I'm without child (I've been told my furry kids don't count) I've been getting frequent updates about new product information at New Arrivals Inc. While I have no need for any of it at the moment, as I'm not in the process of decorating any nurseries (though I'd love to, so email me if you have one) I can't help it but to share. Not only is the bedding adorable, but it looks incredibly well made.. the contrast box pleating makes my heart melt..

While the pink version above may be a little much to call "gender neutral" the celadon below is perfect for boy or girl..

In the last 12 hours or so I've decided my Living Room needs an overhaul.. there's nothing wrong with the old.. I'm just tired of it! So I've decided it's time to let go of my favorite pair of lamps (among other things)- it's no surprise I'd much prefer to keep them, but my attic is already at capacity (and my husband might lose it if I try to squeeze one more thing up there). So with that said, I've decided to formally "list" this fabulous pair of buttercup (aka very light yellow) lamps for sale..

The lamps have been good to us.. so good, in fact, that I've gotten more questions about them then just about every other thing I own. A few things to consider before buying..

They're BIG! I love big lighting- I always think bigger is better, after all, great lighting makes a great statement. But make sure you know what you're getting yourself into- we're talking 30" high and the lampshade is 18" in diameter.

They do come with the fabulous shades they're pictured with above- cream linen with a chocolate tape detail on both the top and bottom.

The base is a silver leaf, but don't let that stop you. I'm a huge fan of mixing metals and I've never had a problem incorporating them with every other metal in the room (and believe me, there are plenty of them).

Don't worry, they're in really great shape and were treated with lots of love over the past few years. I originally purchased them from Restoration Hardware when they were selling Robert Abbey lamps many years ago. I am willing to sell them either as a pair ($400.00) or a single lamp ($225.00).

I'd prefer pick up since I'm a failure with packing peanuts, but email me if you're interested in them and we may be able to work something out.

high/low.. the chair edition

It's surprising to some how costly dining chairs can be. Shelling out thousands of dollars for the perfect set is not unheard of- though the thought of it makes me cringe. Because I'm also on the chair hunt (my new dining table just won't be complete without the perfect set) I have pretty much educated myself in terms of modern reproductions. I know where to find the expensive "quality" pieces, where to buy cheap knock offs, and I have also been thoroughly informed about which styles my husband refuses to sit on while eating his dinner.

Here's a little of what I've gathered over the last few years- minus Ben's ramblings. Just keep in mind this is simply a taste, because like I've said before.. if there's something pricey that you have to have, chances are you can find it somewhere for much less, somewhere else. Or if you're having trouble with that, you can always higher a designer to do the dirty work (hint, hint).

Tory isn't the only one who likes a ghost chair.. If you're thinking ""it's just plastic, how expensive can it be?" you'd be surprised.

Definitely consider all of the differences in terms of quality before buying, but both of these modern versions have leather seats and backs (some knock-offs are made of vinyl.. yuck!)

The Bertoia chair is a classic, so much so that I've written about it many times before. DWR offers it in a variety of finishes, while the Home Decorators Collection version is a little more limited. Keep in mind if you don't like the copy below, many other discount sites also offer a version of this chair.

Chances are if you don't know furniture you still know the name Eames. This "Eames" molded chair may not have the heavy base of his tulip chair, but the seat is the same and the lines are just as classic.

Some just can't get past the "plastic" and prefer to use sit on the more traditional wood. KMart has a great new line of modern furnishings and this is one of their many options..

For those who love/can stomach the plastic.. I like to consider this highly fashionable, perhaps something that isn't for everyone, but is very fun! A set is great, but if you're feeling like all of that plastic could be a little overbearing, these are really fun as accents in the corner of a room, as extra seating.

The Marais A is considered the quintessential French Cafe chair, but these days many are bringing them into their home. With so many mixing natural and industrial elements- in kitchens and dining areas, these metal chairs compliment a rustic farm table perfectly.

Now this is a chair my husband could sit on (I know I promised to leave out the Ben commentary).. The wishbone design is a little easier for some to digest, but the truth is, it's just as stylish and very in right now..

When talking knock-offs I feel like I should always leave you with a few words of wisdom about quality and getting your money's worth. Cheap isn't always better and most of the time you do get what you pay for. So if you're looking for a piece you can use for years without having to replace it, I'd suggest considering a more expensive, better quality piece. But if you're fickle and constantly like to change things around a bit, there's no reason to go the expensive route.
